He knows what I know. Canada is made up by rugged, determined and battle-hardened people. Our country has always fought against fascist forces around the world.
While we have often fallen short, there has been a spirit in #Canada to always increase the measure of freedom, justice and fairness that each of us receive ...and deserve. It is our birthright, and that of every newcomer to #Canada. It is the promise of everyone who lives in Canada.
And #Canada has always reached for these ideals of #diversity, #equity and #inclusion, and we will never, ever stop trying to achieve them.
And as the Honourable Member of Parliament Charlie Angus says in this important speech, this is EXACTLY what makes countries like #Canada and #Denmark and all the countries in the #EU a target of countries like the U.S. and #Russia.
A despot can't have an example like Canada out there in the world, making his people believe that *better* is possible.
The very existence of places like #Canada and #Denmark, and all #democracies that continue to strive for #equity, is an AFFRONT to tyrants.
That's why we are here right now in this scary place. That's why #Canada is a target. That's why #Canadians must fight with everything we have to preserve our ideals of being that 'bright light in the darkness', never, ever stopping in our quest to make ourselves better, more just and more welcoming and inclusive to *everyone*.
My #Scottish grandmother came from #Glasgow on an ocean liner alone at the age of 15 to find a better life. My other ancestors fled #Germany, #Ireland and the #Czech Republic to flee poverty and oppression.
The land called #Canada was home to tough, brilliant, sophisticated and noble #FirstNations people who help the first immigrants from #Europe survive. We all have much to atone for in our histories, and learning about those histories help us ALL to achieve greater justice and freedom, and do better than we did in the past.
Today, and every year, #Canadians survive harsh winters, and hard environmental conditions made even harder by the environmental collapse caused by the #fossilfuel industry. This is the crucible in which every #Canadian and newcomer to #Canada are forged.
#Canadians are tough because of our lineage and our day-to-day realities. We all come from a long line of #antifa. Our ancestors taught us all how to survive #autocracy, fascism, and oppression.
We are our ancestors' offspring. We have taken the lessons they have given us, and we've been forged in yet more struggle.
We can see clearly the road ahead. We know it will be tough. As Tommy Douglas said, "The road to freedom must be uphill, even if it is arduous and frustrating."
💪🆙 Let's stand shoulder to shoulder together as one nation.
Stop travelling to the U.S., buying U.S. products. We will win.
